New Pharmacological Approaches in Crohn's Disea...

Inflammatory bowel disease is a common gastro-intestinal disorder marked with chronic inflammation of intestinal epithelium, damaging mucosal tissue and manifests into several intestinal and extra-intestinal symptoms. Currently used medical therapy aim to induce and maintain the patient in remission and ameliorate the disease's secondary effects, rather than modifying or reversing the underlying pathogenic mechanism. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the influence of erythropoietin, TDZD-8 and hemin, in a TNBS-induced colitis. Colitic mice are treated with daily doses of erythropoietin, TDZD-8 or hemin. TNBS-induced colitis was developed in 4 days, providing an acute intestinal inflammation model. These mice presented an increase of MPO, TNF- , IL-1beta and fecal hemoglobin. Erythropoietin treatment had a positive influence in the development of experimental colitis in all evaluated parameters, thus reducing its severity and extension. TDZD-8 nd hemin treatments had also a positive influence in the development of experimental colitis, but not in all evaluated parameters. All tested drugs significantly inhibit acute inflammatory response associated to the TNBS-induced colitis.

This text focuses on the complications following bariatric surgery. The focus is on the immediate and long term complications that would be important to both the general surgeon and those surgeons with specialty experience in bariatric surgery. Sections address the nutritional deficiencies following bariatric surgery with specific attention to Roux en Y gastric bypass and pancreatico-biliary diversion as well as the correction of these deficiencies with medical intervention as well as the indications for surgical revision or reversal. The text reviews the work-up of a bariatric patient with abdominal pain including the appropriate imaging and threshold for operative intervention and the techniques to achieve optimal visualization during this difficult situation. This section focuses on the operative management of anastomotic and staple line leaks and how to definitively manage these surgical emergencies as well as achieve source control and stabilization. Later chapters focus on specific complications following bariatric surgery with specific focus on RYGB, vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), biliary pancreatic diversion, and gastric band. Complications include gastric fistula, gastric staple line disruption following VSG, gastro-jejunal leak following RYGB, relux following bariatric surgery, and failure of weight loss following bariatric surgery. These sections are written by experts in the field of bariatrics and include evidence based medicine as well as expert opinion on the management of bariatric complications. The sections provide a review of the literature and references at the close of each section. Complications in Bariatric Surgery will serve as a resource for both the general surgeon who handles bariatric emergencies as well as the bariatric specialist.

Internal Bleeding

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Internal bleeding is bleeding occurring inside the body. It can be a serious medical emergency depending on where it occurs (e.g. brain, stomach, lungs), and can potentially cause death and cardiac arrest if proper medical treatment is not received quickly.Internal bleeding can occur by traumatic injury such as high speed deceleration in an automobile accident, or by blood vessel rupture from high blood pressure. Also, internal bleeding can be caused by hitting or running against a sharp object in that area. Some diseases may also cause internal bleeding, such as the Filovirus Ebola. This infection, together with similar infections such as the Marburg virus, is rare. The most common cause of internal bleeding is carcinoma (cancer), either of the gastro-intestinal tract or of the lung, or more rarely of other organs such as the prostate, pancreas or kidney.
